This blog is a platform for engaging with Liam Engel’s PhD project, ‘An Online Australian Drug Discussion.’ In this thesis, Liam considered two questions;

  1. How did participants on an Australian forum supporting people who use illicit drugs discuss and represent drugs, drug use, and related policies?
  2. What insights did this forum and its participants offer to policy makers concerned with illicit drug harm reduction?

The project was grounded in participatory engagement with online, Australian drug discussion, and this blog aims enhance the connection between the project, online drug user communities, and other interested parties.

About

This project drew on a critical discourse analysis of Bluelight.org’s Australian drug discussion to learn how participants understood drugs, drug use and drug policy, and to consider the implications of these understandings for harm reduction policy makers.

Liam Engel’s PhD project was undertaken with support from the University of Canberra and Bluelight.org, primary supervision from Deborah Lupton, secondary supervision from Glen Fuller and additional advisory from Monica Barratt.
